Standing before the Gereformeerde Kerk, do you feel the weight of history? This church has a story. It is a story of faith, splits and mergers. It is a story deeply interwoven with the fabric of the Netherlands.
The Gereformeerde Kerken in Nederland emerged in 1892. Two groups joined forces. These groups had previously separated from the Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk. The Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerk and the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk united. This union sought to continue the traditions of the old Gereformeerde Kerken. These churches traced their roots back to 1618 and the Reformation.
In name, belief, and governance, the Gereformeerde Kerken aimed to be a continuation. They looked back to the time before 1816. The Synod of Dordrecht’s acts begin with a mention. It says that in 1618, a national synod of the Gereformeerde Kerken convened.
The Gereformeerde Kerken in Nederland had two universities. These were the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam and the Theologische Universiteit in Kampen. These institutions trained future ministers.
However, the story does not end there. On May 1 2004, the Gereformeerde Kerken in Nederland merged. They joined the Protestantse Kerk in Nederland. This merger created the largest Protestant denomination in the Netherlands. The fusion included three “Samen op Weg” churches. These were the Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk, the Gereformeerde Kerken in Nederland and the Evangelisch-Lutherse Kerk.
The roots of the Gereformeerde Kerken trace back even further. The Afscheiding of 1834 was a key event. Several factors led to this separation from the Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk. The Gereformeerde confessions lost practical importance. Professor Hofstede de Groot believed the Dutch Reformed Church no longer bound. The Dordrecht Rules faced criticism. The teachings on reconciliation, election and human depravity were outdated. The 18th-century theology was heavily influenced by the Enlightenment.
Furthermore, the gereformeerde church government disappeared. The Dordtse Kerkorde was abolished. In 1816, a new Algemeen Reglement was introduced. This created a hierarchical structure. The king was at its head. Ministers defending gereformeerde beliefs faced persecution. They were removed from their positions.
A subtle change occurred in the proponentsformule. This formula was used by preacher candidates. They declared the gereformeerde confession to be “in accordance with God’s Word.” The phrase “because” changed to “insofar as”. This allowed for freedom in teaching.
Dr. Abraham Kuyper played a crucial role in the Doleantie movement. He established the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam in 1880. His goal was church restoration.
After the union of 1892, disagreements arose. These concerned baptism and regeneration. Kuyper taught the presumed regeneration. This served as the basis for baptism. In 1905, a compromise was reached. It urged self-examination.
In 1926, a conflict known as the Geelkerken affair took place. It revolved around interpreting Genesis 3 literally. The Synod of Assen in 1926 declared the passage described a “sensory-perceptible” snake.
Another split occurred in 1944. During the Vrijmaking, the Gereformeerde Kerken vrijgemaakt broke away. This happened after Dr. K. Schilder’s suspension.
The Gereformeerde Kerken collaborated with other churches until the 1970s. These churches included the Gereformeerde Gemeenten and the Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerken.
The Samen op Weg process began in 1962. It ended on May 1 2004. The Gereformeerde Kerken in Nederland merged. They joined the Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk and the Evangelisch-Lutherse Kerk. This formed the Protestantse Kerk in Nederland (PKN).
The Gereformeerde Kerken influenced various organizations. These had close ties to the church. Examples include the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. Others were the newspaper De Standaard and the Anti-Revolutionaire Partij.
Looking at the Gereformeerde Kerk now, remember its complex history. It reflects the dynamic nature of faith. It shows the ongoing search for meaning and unity. It stands as a testament to the enduring power. It shows the power of belief in the heart of Amsterdam.
