Hidden in plain sight, the Genieloods in Uithoorn whispers tales of a time gone by. This unassuming structure, once a vital part of Fort aan de Drecht, now stands as a testament to transformation. The Genieloods, likely built in 1888, played a crucial role in the defense of Amsterdam. As part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, a UNESCO World Heritage site, it housed munitions, defense materials, and even a combat boat. Imagine soldiers bustling about, preparing for unseen threats, the air thick with anticipation. Originally a military storehouse and sleeping quarters, the Genieloods later served as a garage for the nearby Fortwachterswoning, rebuilt in 1998. The Genieloods is unique. It boasts eleven bays instead of the usual thirteen, a rare architectural feature. Left to decay, this historical gem was rescued by COUP. They recognized its potential and embarked on a meticulous restoration, transforming the dilapidated storehouse into a magnificent villa. Working with Marco Bruijnes Architecten and Buro Moon, COUP preserved the authentic details while modernizing the structure. The restoration was challenging. Previous renovations had disregarded the historical elements. Every detail, from the skewed window frames to the salvaged wood, required careful attention. The builders had to adapt pre-cut window frames to fit the uneven openings. The Genieloods showcases a commitment to sustainability. Reclaimed wood, a hybrid heating system, and PV panels blend seamlessly with the historical fabric. Thanks to the efforts of COUP, the Province of Noord-Holland, and the Nationaal Restauratiefonds, the Genieloods opened its doors to new residents in early April 2021. The Genieloods stands not just as a beautiful home, but as a symbol of resilience and the power of preservation.
