In 1988, a quiet giant arose near Schiphol. This giant, Gemaal De Bolstra, doesn’t boast a towering presence. Its strength lies in its vital function. Gemaal De Bolstra diligently manages the water levels of the Haarlemmermeerpolder, ensuring Schiphol and the surrounding areas stay dry. This unassuming pumping station, built initially for Schiphol Airport, was later entrusted to the Hoogheemraadschap Rijnland. It carries a name steeped in history. Gemaal De Bolstra is named after Melchior Bolstra. Bolstra, along with Nicolaas Cruquius, devised the ingenious plans to drain the Haarlemmermeer in the 18th century. Their vision laid the groundwork for the polder we see today. Gemaal De Bolstra plays a crucial role in this ongoing story. The expansion of Schiphol created a challenge. Increased paved surfaces hindered natural water absorption. Building a reservoir wasn’t an option due to the risk of attracting birds, a hazard for aircraft. The solution? Gemaal De Bolstra. This pumping station efficiently channels excess water from Schiphol and its surroundings into the Ringvaart. Its construction cost 2,500,000 euros. It has a capacity of 100 cubic meters per minute. While modest in appearance, Gemaal De Bolstra stands as a testament to human ingenuity. It works tirelessly, automatically adjusting its operation based on the water level, a silent guardian against flooding. It reminds us that even the most unassuming structures can play a vital role.
