Have you ever wondered what happened to a small village called Cella? Let’s step back in time to the year 1274 to discover the fascinating story of Fürstenzell and the humble beginnings of this charming Bavarian market town. In the 13th century, Cella was a modest village nestled amidst the rolling hills of Lower Bavaria. It was a place unknown to most, with a simple chapel dedicated to St. Lawrence. But fate had an interesting twist in store for this sleepy hamlet.

One influential figure who saw potential in Cella was Domherr Hartwig from Passau. He believed in the power of faith and community. He purchased the humble village along with its surrounding land. He then took a bold decision – to donate it to the Cistercian monks. This act of generosity marked the beginning of a new era for Cella. The Cistercians, known for their dedication to austere living and hard work, flocked to this new location. In the same year, Duke Heinrich XIII of Lower Bavaria generously granted the village special privileges. He granted the monks freedom from taxes, duties and lower jurisdiction. This act of grace prompted a name change, transforming “Zell” into “Fuerstencelle,” which eventually transitioned to our well-known Fürstenzell – a nod to the princely favor bestowed upon the village.

The arrival of the Cistercians spurred further development in Fürstenzell. Their expertise and hard work transformed the village into a prosperous location. The monks began to erect buildings within the village, creating a bustling community with its own unique character. The beautiful monastery was established, and within its walls, they established a thriving monastery that served as the beating heart of the village.

A special mention must be made for the Monastery Church. Construction began in the 14th century and went through several transformations. It was eventually rebuilt in the stunning Rococo style during the 18th century, making it a true architectural gem. Today, the monastery stands as a testament to the dedication of the Cistercian monks. The monastery church, a masterpiece of Bavarian Rococo architecture, is still a place of prayer and contemplation.

It’s worth noting that the monastery’s story was not without its challenges. In 1803, during the secularization of Bavaria, the Cistercian monks were forced to leave. The monastery was seized. However, the legacy of the monks lived on, and their devotion to the community left its mark on Fürstenzell. The village continued to flourish, with the monastery church becoming the focal point for the parish.

As we wrap up our journey back in time, we stand before the monastery, its imposing facade evoking centuries of history. The sight before us is a testament to the vision of the Cistercian monks and the generous spirit of Duke Heinrich XIII. And while the original village of Cella may be long gone, its legacy continues to inspire and resonate in the vibrant market town of Fürstenzell.
