Imagine a city planner standing right where we are today. That’s similar to what Frans Hendricksz. Oetgens did. This is the Frans Hendricksz. Oetgensbrug. It is also known as Bridge 76.

This bridge is more than just a way to cross the Prinsengracht. It marks a key point in Amsterdam’s history. It sits on the western edge of the Amstel river. The Frans Hendricksz. Oetgensbrug also marks the boundary of the famous Amsterdam canal district.

For centuries, a bridge has stood here. Maps from 1662 and 1688 show its presence. The current Frans Hendricksz. Oetgensbrug dates back to 1773. Look closely at the Amstel side. You can see the weathered date stone that reads “Anno 1773”.

In the 20th century, the Frans Hendricksz. Oetgensbrug faced challenges. Increased traffic took its toll. Repairs became frequent. In 1935, the Frans Hendricksz. Oetgensbrug had to close. Its under and upper decks were worn. In 1972, an internal renovation occurred. The bridge received a reinforced concrete span. The Frans Hendricksz. Oetgensbrug’s foundation was renovated four years later. The work took almost a year.

The Frans Hendricksz. Oetgensbrug has three spans. It is a stone arch bridge. Its design has remained consistent for centuries.

This bridge is named after Frans Hendricksz. Oetgens. He was once the mayor of Amsterdam. More importantly, he helped plan the city’s expansion. Oetgens worked with Hendrik Staets, Lucas Jansz Sinck and Hendrick de Keyser. Together, they developed the plan for the third expansion of the canal belt.

Interestingly, another bridge once carried Oetgens’ name. Bridge 38 in the Reguliersgracht was unofficially called Oetgenssluis. That name was discontinued in 2016. The Frans Hendricksz. Oetgensbrug served as a model. It inspired the replacement of the Jan Vinckebrug across the Amstel. This Jan Vinckebrug crosses the Nieuwe Prinsengracht.

Take a moment to appreciate the Frans Hendricksz. Oetgensbrug’s historical significance. It connects us to Amsterdam’s past. Its design reflects centuries of history and careful city planning. The Frans Hendricksz. Oetgensbrug is a testament to Amsterdam’s growth and resilience.
