Can a bridge whisper secrets of circularity? Here at the Fortbrug in Weesp, near Amsterdam, it certainly seems so. This bridge isn’t just a pathway; it’s a testament to Amsterdam’s ambitious goal of complete circularity by 2050. The Fortbrug stands as a symbol of resourcefulness. It’s built with repurposed girders from two bridges in Amsterdam that became redundant. These bridges, replaced by a tunnel at Kabelweg and Nieuwe Hemweg, were far from their end-of-life. One was a mere 10 years old. The other was 35. They were practically brand new. Their sturdy components possessed significant reuse potential. So, they embarked on a journey to become the backbone of the Fortbrug. This innovative project, expected to be completed in early 2025, involved a collaboration between Antea Group, the Municipality of Amsterdam, Nebest, and Combinatie De Klerk – Hakkers. Antea Group meticulously designed the Fortbrug around these salvaged girders. They even integrated the edge elements into existing girders, minimizing the need for new materials. The Fortbrug isn’t just connecting two points. It’s connecting the past with the future, showcasing how ingenuity can transform what’s “overbodig,” or redundant, into something vital and new. It’s whispering a story of sustainability and reminding us that even in a modern city like Amsterdam, the echoes of resourcefulness can resonate across a bridge.
