Deep within the heart of the Stelling van Amsterdam, Fort bij Velsen stands as a silent sentinel. Fort bij Velsen witnessed history unfold. Originally constructed of unreinforced concrete between 1885 and 1899, Fort bij Velsen stands as a unique testament to Dutch military engineering. It was one of the first forts completed within the Stelling van Amsterdam, a defensive ring of forts and other structures built to protect Amsterdam. Fort bij Velsen, positioned strategically at the junction of the North Sea Canal and Zijkanaal A near Beverwijk, played a crucial role in defending the vital waterway access to Amsterdam. Its heavy armament included three armored gun turrets, two in the main building (now demolished) and one in the remaining front building. Each turret housed a 15-centimeter Krupp-Gruson cannon, capable of firing projectiles over 10 kilometers. Imagine the roar of these powerful guns, echoing across the landscape as they defended against potential invaders. The fort housed 340 soldiers, underscoring its importance in the defensive strategy. Sadly, much of Fort bij Velsen was demolished in 1983. Despite the protests of the Province of Noord-Holland and local community, the fort, then owned by a demolition specialist, fell victim to the wrecking ball. The main building and connecting passage were destroyed. Fortunately, the guns were saved and now reside in the Military Historical Museum in Leiden. The remaining front building, built of rubble concrete, with its partially intact Krupp-Gruson cannon, stands as a reminder of the fort’s strength. It became a Rijksmonument (national heritage site) in 2000, a testament to its historical and architectural significance. Even in its partially demolished state, Fort bij Velsen continues to capture the imagination. The fort continues to resonate with stories of a time when it guarded the vital waterways of Amsterdam. It serves as a reminder of the ingenuity and determination of those who built and defended the Stelling van Amsterdam.
