Whispers of sabotage and resilience echo through the ages here at Fort bij Uitermeer. This fort, nestled on the banks of the Vecht River, has witnessed centuries of Dutch ingenuity and defense. Fort bij Uitermeer played a crucial role in the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, a defensive line that used water to protect the Netherlands. Later, it became part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, further solidifying its strategic importance. Originally a simple sconce built around 1589, Fort bij Uitermeer was strengthened into a full fort in 1673. This was to protect a vital sluice that controlled the flooding of the land between the Vecht and the fortress of Naarden. The fort also guarded the ‘s-Gravelandse Vaart canal and key roads and railway lines. A dramatic chapter in the fort’s history unfolded during the Prussian invasion of 1787. A small Prussian force tricked a lone farmhand into lowering the fort’s bridge. The fort, manned by only a handful of soldiers, fell without a fight. The 19th century brought significant changes. A bomb-proof tower fort was constructed in 1845. Later modifications included a cannon storage building and alterations to protect against modern weaponry. The ‘s-Gravelandse Vaart was even rerouted around the fort. Despite its upgrades, Fort bij Uitermeer never saw direct combat. It served as a storage depot during World War II. After the war, the fort was partially demolished. The tower remains a striking ruin today, a testament to its enduring strength. Fort bij Uitermeer now stands as a peaceful reminder of its turbulent past. You can explore the grounds, walk around the moat, and imagine the soldiers who once defended this strategic location.
