Can you imagine 326 soldiers sheltering within these walls? Welcome to Fort bij Spijkerboor a behemoth of military might. This isn’t just any fort. It’s one of the largest in the Amsterdam Defence Line a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built between 1886 and 1913 it stands as a testament to a bygone era of strategic defense.

Fort bij Spijkerboor sits at a crucial junction. Three waterways converge here the Noordhollandsch Kanaal the Beemster ringvaart and the Knollendammervaart. The fort’s strategic location was vital to preventing enemy advances. Interestingly the original plan placed the fort on the other side of the Noordhollandsch Kanaal. The ground proved too unstable however. So engineers brought in extra sand to create a solid foundation. This was vital. The heavy concrete structure needed firm ground to prevent sinking.

This isn’t just a sturdy structure. Fort bij Spijkerboor showcases impressive military engineering. It’s a ‘Model B’ fort. This means its gun turrets are connected to the main building by a passage. This protected the cannons from enemy fire. Unique to Fort bij Spijkerboor it has two floors. This allowed soldiers superior firing positions over the Ringdijk. Few other forts boast this feature.

The fort’s armament was exceptionally powerful. Its double-barreled rapid-fire cannon had a range exceeding ten kilometers. It could reach Alkmaar and even the Zuiderzee. Imagine the sheer firepower. The rotating armored cupola weighing 20000 kilos. Fourteen soldiers were needed to operate this monstrous weapon. The cupola commandant directed two cannon commandants. They in turn gave orders to soldiers who aimed and loaded the cannon. Six more men supplied ammunition.

The Fort bij Spijkerboor miraculously survived the Second World War intact. Most other forts lost their smaller turrets. The Germans salvaged the metal. The immense weight of Fort bij Spijkerboor’s cupola saved it. It was too heavy and too much trouble to remove or destroy. Besides it was being used as a prison.

Even today the fort’s interior remains remarkably preserved. The kitchen with its huge kettles is still there. The soldiers’ quarters the washroom with tilting washbasins and the toilets with surprisingly modern potties all survived. Even the officers’ private toilet still exists. The fort also bears the marks of its time as a prison. Paintings and even a chapel remain visible reminders of its post-war use. It housed NSB members and later those who resisted fighting in the Indonesian independence war. The tensions between former resistance fighters and those who refused to fight led to frequent conflicts. A steel fence separated the groups. The last prisoner left in 1951.

Today Fort bij Spijkerboor welcomes visitors. It’s a popular spot for hikers cyclists and boaters. You can even rent a holiday home in the former mountain shed. The fort continues to offer fascinating glimpses into the past a testament to military ingenuity and resilience. From wartime stronghold to prison to nature reserve Fort bij Spijkerboor remains a captivating landmark.
