“Is that a fort or a party venue?” a young boy whispered to his father, pointing towards Fort bij Marken-Binnen. Fort bij Marken-Binnen stands proudly within the Starnmeerpolder, a key part of the Stelling van Amsterdam defense line. Built around 1905, Fort bij Marken-Binnen served a vital purpose. It protected the access route along the Markervaart waterway. Imagine 300 soldiers stationed within its walls, ready to defend against invaders attempting to reach the heart of Amsterdam via the Alkmaardermeer. Originally, an engineer’s shed also housed an additional 75 soldiers, although it was sadly demolished after World War II. Fort bij Marken-Binnen wasn’t just about brute force. A clever defensive strategy involved a liniewal, a short dike, constructed between 1899 and 1901. This dike served a dual purpose. It acted as a flood barrier, keeping the southern Starnmeerpolder dry during inundations. It also provided a strategic position for artillery. Although large sections have been removed, this dike once stretched from the Knollendammervaart to the Markerpolder dike. Today, Fort bij Marken-Binnen embraces a more peaceful existence. During the week, it transforms into a training center, hosting safety courses like first aid and company emergency response. Come the weekend, Fort bij Marken-Binnen throws open its doors to a world of fun. Escape rooms, laser games, even Ubisoft VR escape games offer thrills for friends and families. Children’s parties become unforgettable with simulated fire drills led by real firemen. The fort also hosts weddings and corporate events. It’s remarkable how Fort bij Marken-Binnen, once a bastion of defense, has become a hub of activity and celebration.
