“Five shots every six minutes.” The old soldier’s voice echoed across the expanse of Fort bij IJmuiden. “That’s all the time they had to stop a warship.” We stand here, on what was once a vital defense point, facing the unforgiving North Sea. Fort bij IJmuiden. A sentinel guarding the entrance to the North Sea Canal, protecting the lifeline to Amsterdam. Construction began in 1881, a mere five years after the canal’s opening. The fort was designed as an irregular hexagon, a fortress of brick and earth, with three levels housing a garrison of 325 men. Its most prominent feature? An armored battery facing the sea, bristling with five 24 cm guns. These were state-of-the-art at the time, capable of hurling projectiles 8 km, piercing 43 cm of wrought iron armor. But technology marches on. Within a few decades, the fort’s defenses were outpaced by advances in naval firepower. High-explosive shells rendered brick and earth fortifications vulnerable. Quick-firing, high-caliber guns made the fort’s rate of fire seem glacial. By World War I, Fort bij IJmuiden was obsolete, yet it stood ready. During World War II, the Germans stripped the fort of its valuable metal, leaving only the difficult-to-remove armored gallery. They then incorporated the fort into the Atlantikwall, adding concrete bunkers and newer artillery. In 1929, a new branch of the North Sea Canal transformed Fort bij IJmuiden into an island, further isolating it. Years later, canal widening claimed two-thirds of the island, destroying many of the German additions. The fort, however, stubbornly endured. Today, Fort bij IJmuiden stands as a testament to a bygone era of coastal defense. It serves as a reminder of the ingenuity and determination to protect Amsterdam, a city built on resilience and adaptation.
