Why was Fort aan de Nekkerweg, also known as Fort Beemster, built in the heart of the serene Beemster polder? It seems out of place, doesn’t it? This imposing structure, completed in 1912 (though the date 1913 is mistakenly carved on its facade), wasn’t part of the original defense plans. It was a late addition to the Stelling van Amsterdam, a crucial defensive line protecting the city. Fort aan de Nekkerweg, a model B fort, with its two domed turret buildings connected by underground passages called poternes, stands as a testament to changing military strategies. Its purpose was to defend the access roads of Nekkerweg and Volgerweg. Imagine the soldiers stationed here, their lives intertwined with the quiet rhythm of the polder. They were responsible for maintaining the fort’s defenses. These defenses included unique features like water reservoirs and a water purification system, still present today. The fort also boasts a separate greywater drainage system, a testament to its forward-thinking design. Fort aan de Nekkerweg holds more than just military history. Between 1918 and 1921, it served as a prison, alongside Fort aan de Jisperweg and Fort bij Spijkerboor. A prisoner uprising occurred in 1918, fueled by rumors of a revolution. Later, during World War II, German prisoners of war were held within its walls. After the war, it became a detention center for delinquents, and from 1951 to 1982, it housed explosives. Now, Fort aan de Nekkerweg has undergone a dramatic transformation. It’s a luxurious wellness center, complete with a hotel and restaurants. The extensive underfloor heating system, a remarkable 28 kilometers long, utilizes heat recovered from wastewater. Fort aan de Nekkerweg stands as a symbol of resilience and adaptation. From a military stronghold to a place of tranquility, it continues to write its story.
