Ever wondered about a fort with only one kazemat? Welcome to Fort aan de Drecht. This isn’t just any fort. It’s a unique part of the Stelling van Amsterdam a defense system built between 1881 and 1919. Designed to protect Amsterdam by flooding the surrounding area this impressive structure stands as a testament to clever military engineering.

Fort aan de Drecht completed in 1911 was one of the last forts built. It’s a Model B fort a more compact design reflecting advancements in weaponry and cost-cutting measures. Unlike other forts its location meant it didn’t need the usual firepower. So it only got one kazemat a fortified structure usually there are two.

But Fort aan de Drecht possesses a unique feature. A 23-ton steel plate 20 centimeters thick! This armored position protected the damsluis in the Amsteldijk. It housed two machine guns offering significant defense. This steel plate is incredibly heavy and sits between two concrete structures. It’s a fascinating piece of military history.

Construction started in 1884. Workers first dug out peat. They filled the resulting hole with sand. This created a sturdy foundation for the fort’s impressive concrete walls. About 1500 fourteen-meter-long piles were driven into the ground. The front wall is 1.5 meters thick. The other walls and the rear are 1 meter thick. The roof is between 1.25 and 2 meters thick reinforced with iron railway bars.

After World War II the fort stored anti-tank mines. The municipality of Uithoorn took over in 1978. After years of vacancy it underwent a major renovation around 2000. Today this fascinating fort houses businesses a restaurant and even a wedding venue. It’s a striking example of how a historical site can be repurposed.
