Did the aroma of fresh produce ever lead you to a secret? Here at Food Center Amsterdam, it’s not just the scent that’s captivating. The story is too. Officially named Food Center Amsterdam in 1998, this place has worn many names. Centrale Markt in 1934. Centrale Groothandelsmarkt by 1977. Yet its purpose remains. Food Center Amsterdam feeds Amsterdam. This 40-hectare site, north of Jan van Galenstraat, is a bustling hub for food wholesalers. It supplies retailers, restaurants, healthcare facilities, and supermarkets. It isn’t open to the public. But imagine the energy within these walls. Professionals trading everything from meat and poultry to fish, fruits, vegetables, and general groceries. Food Center Amsterdam boasts the largest and most diverse selection of fresh produce in the Netherlands. A hidden gem fueling the city. The history of Food Center Amsterdam is layered, much like a delicious lasagna. It began less appetizingly. The site housed the Centrale Asch- en Vuilnisbelt, a garbage dump, since the late 18th century. Its rail connection to Haarlem came from this less savory era. This location, by the Kostverlorenvaart canal, also hosted Amsterdam’s central (vegetable) market from 1895 until the opening of Centrale Markt in 1934. Remnants of this history linger in nearby street names like Appeltjesmarkt and Groenmarktkade. The original Centrale Markt, with its ten docks, warehouses, and central market hall with a clock tower, aimed to improve Amsterdam’s food supply. Sadly, this vital hub also played a role in the darker chapter of World War II. The German occupiers used markets to control Jewish businesses. Part of Food Center Amsterdam, then Centrale Markt, became a “Jewish Market”. Jewish visitors were marked with a red “J” on their market passes. Yet, amidst this oppression, resistance bloomed. False documents, created within the market, saved Jewish people from deportation by deeming them essential for the food supply. The market cellars sheltered those in hiding until liberation. The central market hall, designed by Nicolaas Lansdorp, was once the largest in Europe. Its clock tower served as a vital timekeeper for many Amsterdammers. Although the tower is gone, the hall itself achieved Rijksmonument status in 2007. Today, plans are underway to revitalize Food Center Amsterdam. The southern part will transform into the Marktkwartier, a new residential area. The grand hall awaits a new public role, perhaps as a covered daily market. Food Center Amsterdam stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s enduring spirit. From its humble beginnings as a waste site to its vital role in wartime resistance, it continues to nourish the city. So the next time you savor a meal in Amsterdam, remember the story of Food Center Amsterdam. It’s a story of resilience, adaptation, and the unwavering power of food.
