“Who was Floris V?” some might ask when they first encounter this Floris V Stone. It stands here as a memorial to a significant figure. Floris V was Count of Holland and Zeeland. He lived from 1254 to 1296. His life was cut short at the age of 41.

Floris V became count at a very young age. He was only two years old when his father died in 1256. He did not rule on his own until 1266. Floris expanded Holland. He brought West Frisians under control in 1289. He also acquired Waterland and other territories. Floris took land from the diocese of Utrecht. He made lords in borderlands recognize him. These included Amstel and Woerden. Holland became similar to today’s North and South Holland. Floris improved waterways and dikes. This helped agriculture.

Before expanding his lands, Floris faced a revolt. Peasants in the north of Holland rebelled from 1273 to 1274. Floris was interested in more than just Holland. He allied with Edward I of England. This gave his people trading benefits. Wool was sold at Dort now Dordrecht. Hollanders and Zeelanders could fish on the English coast.

Floris’s son John was sent to Edward’s court. John was meant to marry an English princess. But Floris changed his alliance in 1296. He joined Philip IV of France. This was likely because of his cousin John of Avesnes. John and Philip disliked Guy of Dampierre who was also Floris’ adversary.

This change in alliance led to Floris’s downfall. Discontented nobles captured him. They were encouraged by the English king. Peasants tried to free him. But the nobles killed Floris at Muiden Castle. This tragic event inspired many Dutch writers.

Floris V’s story is one of ambition. It is also a story of political shifts and a violent end. Here in Amsterdam, this Floris V Stone marks his place in history. He expanded Holland. He also played a complex game of alliances. Remember Floris V. He was a powerful count. He was killed because of his choices.
