In 1903, a melody began to unfold, not in music, but in the creation of an organ-building legacy. This melody, Flentrop Orgelbouw, started with Hendrik Wicher Flentrop. He was an organist in Zaandam. Flentrop Orgelbouw, now a world-renowned company, started as a modest piano and organ business. This marked the beginning of a remarkable journey in organ craftsmanship.

Flentrop Orgelbouw wasn’t just about building new organs. It embraced the restoration of historic instruments, breathing new life into the echoes of the past. The company has built over 400 organs. They even exported instruments globally, sharing their passion for organ music with the world. One of their most significant restoration projects was the reconstruction of the organ at Hamburg’s Sankt Katharinen church, completed in 2013. This endeavor showcased Flentrop Orgelbouw’s commitment to preserving musical heritage.

Hendrik Wicher Flentrop, a pioneer in historically oriented organ building, instilled a unique philosophy within the company. His aim was not to alter organs to current trends. He strove to restore them to their original glory. Influenced by the Organ Reform Movement, Hendrik and his son, Dirk Andries Flentrop, favored mechanical action and slider chests. Dirk took over the business in 1940. He continued his father’s legacy. His leadership led to significant restorations, including the Laurenskerk organs in Alkmaar, the Schnitger organ in Zwolle, and the historic organ in Mexico City’s cathedral.

Flentrop Orgelbouw’s legacy extends beyond the Flentrop family. From 1976 to 1998, Johannes Antonij Steketee led the company, securing international projects. One such project was the organ for Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. The leadership baton was then passed to Cees van Oostenbrugge. He continued until 2008, followed by Frits Elshout and Erik Winkel. Each leader has contributed to the ongoing symphony of Flentrop Orgelbouw. They ensure the company remains a key player in organ construction and restoration.

Flentrop Orgelbouw’s story is a testament to dedication, passion, and a commitment to the art of organ building. The company’s instruments continue to resonate in churches and concert halls worldwide, filling sacred spaces with the timeless beauty of organ music. This melody, begun over a century ago, still resonates today. Flentrop Orgelbouw continues to craft and restore organs, keeping the music alive for generations to come.
