Lost your bike in Amsterdam? Chances are it’s at the Fietsdepot. The Fietsdepot, formerly known as the AFAC (Algemene Fiets Afhandel Centrale), is where the city brings bikes that have been removed for being parked illegally or deemed abandoned. This isn’t just a storage facility. It’s a massive operation processing thousands of bikes. In 2006, a staggering 24,000 bikes ended up at the Fietsdepot in the Western Harbor area. The Fietsdepot started in 2003 as a centralized location to manage all the removed bikes. Before that, various agencies would remove bikes, making it difficult for owners to locate them. The Fietsdepot streamlined the process, making it easier to reunite people with their lost rides. Interestingly, stolen bikes are returned free of charge to their rightful owners. If your bike was simply parked incorrectly, you can reclaim it for a fee. The Fietsdepot plays a crucial role in keeping Amsterdam’s streets clear and navigable. With over 850,000 bikes in the city, the Fietsdepot helps manage the sheer volume of bicycles. They process over 62,000 bikes annually. Bikes that are not claimed are sold to TradeFrm Professional. This organization distributes them to various parties, including charities and social projects, even some overseas. So, if you find yourself bikeless in Amsterdam, your first stop should be the Fietsdepot.
