Surely, could that be a lighthouse? No, it’s the Fernmeldeturm Passau. This tower is not just any tower. It’s a landmark that has played a pivotal role in Passau’s communication history.

The Fernmeldeturm Passau, or Fernmeldeturm Passau-Haidenhof, stands tall in the Haidenhof district. It is a vital telecommunications tower owned by Deutsche Funkturm, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom. Built in 1962 and 1963, it was commissioned by Deutsche Bundespost. Its original purpose was to facilitate radio relay links. It also served as a transmitter for the non-public mobile radio service. Additionally, it broadcasted television for Bayerisches Fernsehen and ZDF.

Initially, the Fernmeldeturm Passau reached a height of 76 meters. A striking red and white GFK cylinder, 24 meters tall, housed the television transmitters. With the advent of DVB-T, analog television broadcasting became obsolete. Consequently, the cylinder was removed. On December 5, 2007, the antenna support was shortened. The tower’s height was reduced to a mere 52 meters.

Today, the Fernmeldeturm Passau continues to serve an important purpose. It broadcasts FM radio programs. The frequencies for Unser Radio and Radio Galaxy transmit from this location.

An interesting fact is that the prominent red and white antenna, a fixture for decades, was removed by DFMG using a specialized helicopter. This decision stemmed from the increasing adoption of digital television. The analog system was becoming obsolete. Maintaining the antenna was no longer economically viable for operators and broadcasters.

After the antenna’s removal, a bright white light, much like a lighthouse, began rotating atop the Fernmeldeturm Passau. This light irritated residents and drivers. According to DFMG, it was a daytime obstruction light. It served as a replacement for the 23-meter red and white marking. The nearby helicopter landing pad at the hospital necessitated this. A less obtrusive red light illuminates the tower at night.

Locals voiced their concerns about the disruptive light flashes. Alternative solutions were considered. One proposal involved painting the top 18 meters of the remaining tower red and white. Officials doubted this would be more appealing than the flashing lights. Other ideas included adjusting the luminosity based on daylight or modifying the beam angle. An earlier activation of the steady red night light was also suggested. DFMG committed to addressing the public’s concerns.

While the Fernmeldeturm Passau once transmitted analog television signals, it now primarily supports mobile phone antennas. The old red and white top is no longer essential for this function. Yet, it still carries two FM radio stations for the Passau area.

The Fernmeldeturm Passau stands as a testament to technological evolution. From its early days of analog television to its current role in mobile communication, it reflects the changing landscape of broadcasting. Though its height has been reduced, its significance to Passau remains undiminished. As you observe the tower today, remember its history. Think about the transitions it has undergone to remain a vital part of Passau’s infrastructure.
