Before you stands Facade 027E a testament to transformation. This building on Amsterdam’s Marineterrein was once a restricted military area. For decades it served as a technical education facility for soldiers. Now completely renovated Facade 027E welcomes the public.

Originally part of a pair of identical structures Facade 027E was raised from the ground. This design choice adhered to Le Corbusier’s “Five Points of a New Architecture”. The supporting columns pilotis were striking sculptural features. The upper floors boasted a grid of columns floor beams and solid brick ends. A concrete emergency staircase still faces the water a reminder of its past.

The building’s concrete skeleton was poured on-site. The grain of the shuttering planks remains visible a unique detail. The entrance lies subtly embedded beneath the structure. Bureau SLA masterminded the renovation. They created a new layout new services and new facades.

The transformation was remarkable. Facade 027E now offers flexible spaces. It serves as a workspace and a venue for large meetings. The large lobby spacious restrooms elevator and extra emergency stairs showcase the improvements. Each floor provides 500 square meters of usable space.

The facades are impressive. Large triple-glazed windows 3.5 by 3.5 meters are set in deep window bays. Dark pre-molded fiberglass-reinforced concrete panels clad the ledges. Triangular dog-ear windows of etched frosted glass add a distinctive touch.

The south facade is truly special. Fixed sun blinds crafted from Accoya wood grace the windows. The pattern of these blinds is not random. It subtly represents the flags of the European Union countries a tribute to the Dutch presidency in 2016. The north facade features a fixed pattern of framed glass. The stairwell windows are glazed. They feature an abstracted etched print based on the work of Dutch artist Jan Schoonhoven.

Makerversity a London-based community of makers was the first tenant. This transformation of Facade 027E reflects Amsterdam’s dynamic spirit. It symbolizes the city’s ability to adapt and embrace the future while honoring its past. The building is a fascinating example of how architectural ingenuity can breathe new life into a historic structure. It stands as a modern marvel. Facade 027E is truly a sight to behold.
