Behold Europa Sculpture. What if I told you this artwork adds necessary color to the greyness of the RAI suits? This festive sculpture stands as a vibrant testament to art’s power. It transforms the mundane into something special.

The Europa Sculpture, created by Hans Kuyper, is more than just a statue. It is a statement. It serves as a landmark. It also is a tourist attraction. The Europa Sculpture has a Wikipedia article and a Wikimedia Commons category.

Guillaume Bijl’s festive sculptures, including this one, were commissioned by the Dienst Zuidas. They sought an artistic solution for the ornaments on the entrances. The aim was to add something special to the wall surrounding the RAI area. The sculptures needed to reflect the Amsterdam School ideals. One end of the wall leads to a bridge designed by Piet Kramer, architect and representative of the Amsterdam School.

Bijl said he was mainly influenced by the rather bare industrial surroundings of the RAI. He hoped to freshen up the area a bit. The figures are inspired by Flemish folk and street culture. The human figures are life-size and placed on a high pedestal. This placement makes them seem monumental. It creates a carnivalesque welcome to the RAI’s visitors.

For those swiftly passing by, the Europa Sculpture may be a welcome patch of color. It offers a sigh of relief within the stark contours of the RAI and the Zuidas. The longer you look, the more peculiar the figures appear. The Europa Sculpture simultaneously reaffirms the ambiguity of public space. Although it may be presented as such, it is never neutral.

The wall where the Europa Sculpture resides separates the Zuidas from the residential area. For many visitors of the RAI, the sculptures are an introduction to the building. For residents, they may serve as signposts in a busy street.

The Europa Sculpture indisputably adds some necessary color to the greyness. Its presence sparks discussion. It questions the intentions of art in public space. It invites us to see beyond the ordinary. It transforms a simple wall into a canvas of cultural expression.

So, as you stand before the Europa Sculpture, remember it is more than an artwork. It is a symbol of festive spirit. It is a vibrant intervention in the urban landscape. It is an invitation to pause, reflect, and find joy in the unexpected.
