Hidden within Amsterdam’s bustling Zuid district lies Duivelseiland. It’s a neighborhood shrouded in intriguing history. Duivelseiland translates to “Devil’s Island.” This name evokes images of a remote, sinister place. However, the reality is far more nuanced. Duivelseiland is not an island at all. It’s bordered by the Hobbemakade, Roelof Hartstraat, Roelof Hartplein, Van Baerlestraat, and Ruysdaelstraat. Around 1900, this area was a desolate patch by the Boerenwetering. It earned its name from the infamous Devil’s Island, a penal colony off the coast of French Guiana. This was where Captain Alfred Dreyfus was exiled. The Amsterdam Duivelseiland also housed a candle factory, notorious for its foul smell. This added to the area’s less-than-desirable reputation. The Dreyfus affair captured international attention. This resonated with Amsterdammers. They saw a parallel between the remote penal colony and this isolated, smelly part of their city. Today, Duivelseiland is a modern neighborhood in the Museumkwartier Oost. It’s home to many singles and young couples, nestled between De Pijp and the Concertgebouwbuurt. Popular spots like Eetcafé Loetje, known for its steaks, and Café Wildschut are located here. Duivelseiland has transformed from a desolate outpost to a vibrant part of Amsterdam. Its name, however, continues to whisper tales of a fascinating past.
