How about a step back in time to a place where rich merchants, royalty, and influential figures once roamed? That place is Duin- en Kruidberg. It stands as a testament to Dutch history and grandeur.

Duin- en Kruidberg started as a humble summer house. Wealthy Amsterdam merchants sought refuge in the countryside. They longed for relaxation, gardening, and hunting like aristocrats.

Later, Duin- en Kruidberg became a royal hunting lodge. Prince William III, later King of England, used it. Here, he planned the Dutch invasion of England. This invasion led to the Glorious Revolution of 1688.

In the 19th century, Duin en Berg merged with Kruidberg. This formed the Duin- en Kruidberg estate. Jacob Theodoor Cremer built the current house around 1900. He chose the Dutch Renaissance Revival style.

Cremer was a prominent figure. He made his fortune in the Dutch East Indies. He hosted royalty and organized lavish hunting events at Duin- en Kruidberg. It became one of the largest country houses in the Netherlands.

During World War II, Duin- en Kruidberg served different purposes. It was a church and a refectory. German officers were housed here. Part of the estate even became a shooting range.

After the war, the Canadian army occupied the house. Then, it became a training center for Red Cross nurses. It also served as a center for repatriates from Indonesia.

In 1961, ABN AMRO bank acquired Duin- en Kruidberg. It was transformed into a holiday resort for bank employees. This was a popular trend among large corporations. They aimed to strengthen employer-employee relationships.

However, interest waned. In 1994, it closed as a company holiday resort. Later, ABN AMRO used it as a conference center. The bank renovated it extensively.

In 2002, Duin- en Kruidberg opened to the public as a five-star hotel. The restaurant De Vrienden van Jacob earned high praise. Today, Lucas Petit manages Duin- en Kruidberg.

The interior boasts remarkable features. The central hall displays a carved fireplace and ceiling paintings. Japanese vases and an Amsterdam longcase clock add to the splendor. The dining room features mural paintings from 1741. These paintings came from Huis ‘t Zeepaert in Dordrecht. The salon room showcases grisailles by Jacob de Wit. Mrs. Cremer’s boudoir is styled in Louis XVI style. The billiard room was furnished by Hampton & Sons from London. It includes Japanese scroll paintings.

The gardens offer a serene escape. Leonard Springer designed the English landscape garden. It replaced the formal French gardens.

Today, most of the estate is owned by Vereniging Natuurmonumenten. It is open to the public. Duin- en Kruidberg is also part of the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park.

So, as you stand here at Duin- en Kruidberg, remember its rich history. From a merchant’s retreat to a royal lodge, and now a luxurious hotel. It is a place where history and nature intertwine. It offers an unforgettable experience for all who visit.
