In the watery embrace of North Holland, where three rivers intertwine, lies the quaint village of Driemond. Driemond, meaning “Threemouth,” takes its name from the convergence of the Gein, Gaasp, and Smal Weesp rivers. These waterways have shaped not only the landscape but also the history of this charming village nestled within Amsterdam. Driemond wasn’t always known by this evocative name. Before 1966, it was called “De Geinbrug,” after the bridge that spanned the Gein. The name Driemond itself echoes a lost piece of history. A grand country estate once stood near the village, also bearing the name Driemond. Sadly, little remains of this estate except for a beautiful fountain, now gracing Frankendael Park in Amsterdam’s Watergraafsmeer. Imagine the elegant gatherings that must have taken place on those vanished grounds. Modern Driemond is a vibrant community. Two primary schools, the Jan Woudsmaschool and the Cornelis Jetsesschool, educate the next generation. The local football club, SV Geinburgia, and Geinburgia Tenis provide athletic pursuits. A small post office serves the residents’ daily needs. In 2011, Driemond welcomed a modern addition, the MATCHZO sports and activity center. This bustling hub houses a spacious sports hall, tennis courts, a gymnasium, and even a village council office. It’s a testament to Driemond’s commitment to community and well-being. Today, Driemond is part of Amsterdam, a unique urban area with its own distinct character. It retains a village atmosphere, a testament to its close-knit community. As you stand here, at the meeting point of these three rivers, you can almost hear the whispers of history. From De Geinbrug to Driemond, this small village holds stories of changing names, lost estates, and a community that thrives amidst the flow of time.
