“Wasn’t this place once part of a military base?” a curious voice whispered. Indeed, the Dreiländerhalle stands on ground once occupied by the Ritter-von-Scheuring-Kaserne. The city of Passau acquired this entire area in 1993 after the military base closed. Now, the Dreiländerhalle pulsates as the heart of Passau’s Messepark, a vibrant hub for events and exhibitions. The Dreiländerhalle opened its doors in 2004, boasting a flexible design that accommodates a variety of events. With over 4,000 seats and a capacity for up to 7,000 standing, it’s the largest venue in Passau. The name, Dreiländerhalle, or “Three-Country Hall”, subtly hints at Passau’s proximity to the borders of Austria and the Czech Republic. Initially, the hall carried a sponsored name, “Streif-Arena”. However, this name failed to resonate with locals and media. By 2007, it reverted back to the simpler, more evocative “Dreiländerhalle.” The hall has hosted numerous events. From political gatherings like the CSU’s annual political Ash Wednesday to lively festivals like the Passauer Dultstadl and the Passauer Dreiländermesse, the Dreiländerhalle has seen it all. Even during the refugee crisis of 2015, it served briefly as a temporary shelter. The Dreiländerhalle stands as a testament to Passau’s adaptability. It seamlessly transitions between hosting exhibitions, concerts, balls, flea markets, and sporting events. The architecture blends functionality with aesthetics. The architects, from sdks in Darmstadt, incorporated a striking artificial pond on the forecourt. This touch, designed by Passau landscape architect Barbara Franz, adds a tranquil note to the bustling atmosphere. Funding for the Dreiländerhalle largely came from the EU’s INTERREG III/A program. This cross-border initiative underscores the hall’s role as a bridge between cultures and nations. The Dreiländerhalle continues to thrive. It is a testament to Passau’s vision. The city transformed a former military site into a vibrant cultural and economic center. The Dreiländerhalle stands as a symbol of renewal and a testament to Passau’s vibrant spirit.
