This stunning mosque in Amsterdam Zuidoost stands as a testament to faith community and architectural ingenuity. Built between 1985 and 2006 it wasn’t just constructed it was a collaborative effort. Suriname-born Mohamed Idris Luqman spearheaded the project. He worked alongside the community of Amsterdam Zuidoost. The vision came from pioneer Mohammed Radja Imamdi also known as Mustafa. Imam Shah Ahmed Noorani Siddiqui provided crucial support. The design is a masterpiece by architect Paul Haffmans.
The Djame Masdjied Taibah is more than just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub for Surinamese Indian and Pakistani communities. Its initial design included two majestic domes and four towering minarets. But the mosque’s popularity soared in the 1990s. The original building proved too small. So in 1998 thanks to the generosity of Mohammed Joenoes Abdul-Gaffar a significant expansion took place. Three additional domes were added. The minarets were also modified. This expansion wasn’t just about size. The extra domes dramatically improved the acoustics. Now the Imam can address a much larger congregation without raising his voice. The expanded mosque now accommodates approximately one thousand worshippers. On average seven hundred people attend the midday prayers. That number significantly increases during holidays.
The Djame Masdjied Taibah’s architecture is truly unique. It’s a harmonious blend of traditional Islamic design elements and modern materials. The building uses a concrete frame. It’s oriented towards Mecca a fundamental requirement in Islamic architecture. Notice the intricate detail. The way the minarets reach towards the sky. The gentle curve of the domes.
