Across the tranquil waters of the Sloterplas, the Dirk de Waterduikerbrug stands as a quiet testament to a local hero. The Dirk de Waterduikerbrug, also known as bridge 617, isn’t your typical Amsterdam bridge. It’s not grand or ornate. Instead, it possesses a simple charm, reflecting its unique purpose. The bridge carries the street Noordzijde over a modest culvert. This culvert connects the Sloterplas marina with a narrow canal stretching northward. Originally, the Dirk de Waterduikerbrug wasn’t part of Cornelis van Eesteren’s 1939 design for the Slotermeer neighborhood. It emerged in the mid-1950s, as the area north of Sloterplas expanded. Its design, with brick walkways and abutments, hints at the Amsterdamse School architectural style. A graceful arch spans the culvert, and natural stone balustrades add a touch of elegance. The bridge owes its existence to Dick Slebos from the Dienst der Publieke Werken (Public Works Department). The extensive use of brick suggests the influence of Piet Kramer, who left the department in 1952. Slebos, along with Dirk Sterenberg, often adapted Kramer’s designs, ensuring a sense of continuity. For many years, the bridge remained nameless, known only by its number. In 2016, Amsterdam invited citizens to propose names for such anonymous bridges. The suggestion to name it the Dirk de Waterduikerbrug was approved in 2017. But who was Dirk de Waterduiker? He was the nickname of Dirk Rietveldt (1858-1940), a local hero credited with saving over 60 people and animals from drowning in Amsterdam’s canals. The name was chosen due to the proximity of three streets named after rescuers: Jan Cupidohof, Dorus Rijkershof, and Frans Naerebouthof. So, the next time you cross the Dirk de Waterduikerbrug, remember the unassuming hero whose name it bears, a man who made a difference in the lives of many. His quiet courage is reflected in the unassuming bridge that now carries his name.
