Gazing across Dijkgraafplein, can you envision a time before these striking Hangbrugmaisonettes graced the skyline? Dijkgraafplein, nestled in Amsterdam Nieuw-West’s Osdorp district, marks the end of Tussen Meer. Its name, bestowed in 1962, honors the “dijkgraaf,” a chairman of water boards, reflecting the water-related street names in the area known as “De Punt.” Tram line 17, a familiar sight, has a long history with Dijkgraafplein. It first terminated here in 1962, amidst a barren landscape. Later replaced by line 1, line 17 returned in 2001, resuming its original route. A key feature of Dijkgraafplein is the unique Hangbrugmaisonettes designed by architect J.P. Kloos. These “bridge houses,” a municipal monument, feature a shared gallery every four floors. Beneath these suspended homes, shops line the ground floor. A Coop supermarket, later a Vomar, served the community here. The square’s architectural timeline spans decades. Low-rise buildings from 1963 stand alongside a much more recent structure from 2007, adding to the layered history of Dijkgraafplein. The Hangbrugmaisonettes, added to the municipal monument list in 2015, stand as a testament to experimental post-war housing design.
