Here stands the Dick van Dijkbrug, a testament to football glory. This bridge is more than just a way to cross the Tweede Molenwetering. It is a tribute to a legend. Let me tell you the story of the Dick van Dijkbrug.

The Dick van Dijkbrug is bridge number 2185. It is located in Amsterdam-Oost. The bridge is a monument to Dick van Dijk. Dick van Dijk was a famous football player.

This area transformed between 1998 and 2002. Park de Meer neighborhood was constructed then. It rose from the grounds of Stadion De Meer. While construction boomed, surrounding areas retained a rural feel. They became sports fields.

In September 2005, the bridges received their names. They were named after players from AFC Ajax’s golden era. This was the successful team of the 1970s. The neighborhood did not have enough bridges for every player though. Dick van Dijk, who passed away in 1997, received a special honor. A bridge outside Park de Meer was chosen for him. Thus, the Dick van Dijkbrug was born.

The Dick van Dijkbrug is entirely made of wood. It gracefully spans the Tweede Molenwetering. You will find it east of the Heinz Stuybrug and Johnny Repbrug. It is the furthest from its sister bridges.

Dick van Dijk’s story is also compelling. Born in 1946, he was a striker. He played for clubs like FC Twente and Ajax Amsterdam. He even lifted the European Cup with Ajax in 1971. He also earned seven caps for the Netherlands national team.

Van Dijk’s career began in Gouda. He played for the local amateur club. His talent soon caught the eye of Hans Croon. Croon was the coach of SVV. He joined SVV at sixteen. Van Dijk quickly rose through the ranks. He became a prolific scorer.

In 1967, he moved to FC Twente. There, he formed a formidable partnership with Theo Pahlplatz. He became the league’s top scorer. In 1969, Ajax came calling.

At Ajax, Van Dijk became a more complete player. He even scored in the 1971 European Cup final. After Ajax, he played in France and Spain.

The Dick van Dijkbrug symbolizes more than just a footballer. It represents a time of triumph. It also stands for the spirit of Amsterdam-Oost. As you cross this bridge, remember Dick van Dijk. Remember his contributions to football. Remember the legacy that lives on in this beautiful city. It is a fitting tribute to a local hero.
