Since 1588 the Diaconie Evangelisch Lutherse Gemeente Amsterdam has served Amsterdam. It’s a vital part of the city’s oldest church communities. The Diaconie isn’t just a church. It’s the church’s helping hand. The word diaconie literally means “to serve”. The Diaconie helps the church serve Amsterdam and the world.
Think of it as a vibrant volunteer organization. Over 50 deacons and other volunteers work tirelessly. They’re supported by a dedicated team at the Diaconaal Centrum In de Zwaan on Maasstraat 148. These five employees keep everything running smoothly.
The Diaconie’s work is far-reaching. They’ve been involved in numerous projects over the years. They’ve invested in communities including hofjes. These are charming inner courtyards that form a social hub. One recent venture is the Project Woonhof Balistraat 104. This former police station is now being transformed into a residential community. It will have a strong neighborhood focus.
Beyond local initiatives the Diaconie supports global projects. They extend their help internationally. They showed solidarity with their Jewish contacts in Israel. They also supported the Tent of Nations run by the Palestinian Nassar family in Bethlehem. They continue supporting projects of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jordan. This demonstrates their commitment to global peace and aid.
The Diaconie’s historical significance is undeniable. Historian Mariëtte Wildeboer recently discovered 33 more names. These were Jewish residents deported during World War II from the Huizen Kemper. Unlike the 77 names commemorated on the memorial window at the Maasstraat Diaconie. These new names represent those who stayed only briefly. They were residents just before the final roundup of Jewish Amsterdammers in September 1943. Mariëtte read these names aloud during the 4th of May commemoration.
