Across the cobblestones and canals, a metallic figure appears to defy gravity. This is De Zwevende Man, also known as the Floating Man. He seems to hover above the ground, a perpetual runner frozen mid-stride. De Zwevende Man is more than just a sculpture. It’s a riddle wrapped in steel, an enigma placed in the heart of Amsterdam. The sculpture, installed in 2000, is crafted from steel by artist Stang Gubbels. The official name is “De Zwevende Man”, but locals have given it other nicknames. Some call it “Man Trying to Catch Tram 10”. Others refer to it as “Man with Violin Case” due to the shape of the object he carries. Interestingly, the sculpture near the Raampoortbrug bridge is often confused with a similar artwork known as “The Blue Violin Player”. That sculpture depicts a running figure with a violin case, aiming for the Bloemgracht tram stop. However, the artist of that piece remains unknown. De Zwevende Man, however, has a known creator and stands as a testament to Gubbels’ artistic vision. The sculpture invites interpretation. Is the man late for an appointment? Is he chasing a dream? Or is he simply caught in the perpetual motion of Amsterdam life? De Zwevende Man remains silent, allowing viewers to create their own narratives. He serves as a unique landmark in a city steeped in history and art.
