Tucked away in the heart of Amsterdam, De Zwaan Auctioneers whispers tales of centuries past. De Zwaan isn’t just any auction house. It’s the oldest, the last of its kind in Amsterdam’s center. Its story begins in 1818 on the Singel canal. Imagine a bustling scene, auctioneers selling household goods in a former brewery. Yes, a brewery. The very building bore the name “De Zwaan” or “The Swan.” De Zwaan thrived, its reputation growing like ripples in the canals. By 1913, it needed more space. De Zwaan relocated to a grand, historic building on Keizersgracht, number 474. Newspapers hailed the move, praising the beautiful and functional space. They admired the glass roof enclosing what was once an open courtyard. They described the pleasant rooms, offering views to the ground floor below. In the late 1930s, a young Gerard van den Brink joined the team. He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming an auctioneer and owner. De Zwaan transformed into a family affair. His daughter, Babette, followed in his footsteps. She practically grew up at the auction table, watching her father command the room. In the early 1990s, she officially joined the business. By 1999, she held the gavel, setting two records in her first auction alone. An 18th-century Amsterdam clock sold for 190,000 guilders. A silver vase by Jan Eisenloeffel fetched 128,000 guilders. Today, Babette leads De Zwaan as director and auctioneer, carrying on her family’s legacy within these historic walls. De Zwaan continues to auction art, antiques, and design. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of tradition and the vibrant history of Amsterdam’s trade.
