Nestled along the remnants of a lock on the Weelsloot, De Vermaning stands as a testament to the Mennonite community of Koog aan de Zaan. This unassuming structure, resembling a farmhouse, belies its rich history. De Vermaning, meaning “exhortation,” reflects the Mennonite practice of encouraging the congregation towards a devout life. The story of De Vermaning begins in the 16th century with the rise of Mennonite groups in the Zaan region. Initially part of the Zaandam congregations, the Waterlanders built their Vermaning on Bonsempad in 1637. Later, in 1680, they united with another Mennonite group, and on a December day in 1680, the first sermon echoed within the unfinished wooden walls of De Vermaning. The names of the builder, Jacob Reijersen, and the building committee members are immortalized on a beam above the pulpit. Throughout the years, De Vermaning underwent several transformations. In 1823, significant renovations took place, including a fresh coat of paint using a mix of “common paint,” black, Prussian blue, vermilion, and even “Dukaate gold.” A majestic Flaes & Brunjes organ arrived in 1870, prompting the relocation of the name beam to its current position. A major restoration in 1873 saw the wooden south and west walls replaced with stone, new chairs installed, and the interior redecorated. The pulpit, painted ebony with a silver trim, became a focal point, contrasting beautifully with the white surroundings. The early 1990s brought another extensive restoration, ensuring De Vermaning’s structural integrity for years to come. De Vermaning continues to serve the community. It is a place of worship, gathering, and reflection, a quiet reminder of the Mennonites who sought a place to practice their faith.
