Picture a time long before computers. Paper mills like De Schoolmeester attracted global fame in bygone years. They wrote history by producing paper of exceptional quality.

Hello everyone. Today, we are standing before De Schoolmeester. It is a historic paper mill with a fascinating story. De Schoolmeester is more than just a windmill. It is a testament to Dutch ingenuity and craftsmanship.

The first paper mill along the river Zaan emerged around 1605. These early mills produced only grey, blue and writing paper. The technology to make white paper was not yet invented. De Schoolmeester continues this tradition.

American Declaration of Independence is said to have been printed on paper made in a paper mill in this region. Imagine the historical significance of that. The very document that declared America’s freedom might owe its existence to a mill like De Schoolmeester.

Many important discoveries were made in the Zaan industrial region. One such discovery was the beater tub. The principles of paper-making involve separating fibers from textile waste. This includes old clothing, rugs, old rope and even fish netting. The beater tub reduced the time required by 75%. It also considerably improved the quality of the paper.

By the end of the 17th century, there were about 40 paper mills in the Zaan region. Each mill was equipped with two or three beater tubs. De Schoolmeester has a rich history of ownership. Since 1692, De Schoolmeester had been owned by several owners. Since 1977, it has been under the care of the Society of Zaan Windmills.

De Schoolmeester stands as a living museum. It is a tribute to the past. It reminds us of a time when paper was made by hand using the power of the wind. Take a moment to appreciate the history around us. De Schoolmeester is not just a mill. It is a symbol of innovation. It is also a symbol of the enduring spirit of the Zaan region.
