Hidden within Amsterdam Noord, De Nieuwe Augustinus whispers tales of transformation. This unassuming church, nestled on Kamperfoelieweg, has lived many lives. Originally built in 1933 as the St. Stephanuskerk, it served a bustling community. The church endured wartime damage in 1943, bearing silent witness to history’s turbulent course. Restored after the war, it continued to serve the faithful, its simple elegance a testament to resilience. Years passed, and the Catholic community in Amsterdam Noord evolved. Several churches closed their doors between 1995 and 2012. St. Stephanus, however, remained, becoming a central hub for the merged parish. There were plans for demolition, whispers of a grand new center. But fate, it seemed, had other plans. Instead of a wrecking ball, De Nieuwe Augustinus received a loving restoration in 2013-2014. Its interior was modernized, breathing new life into its aged walls. The church was rededicated, no longer St. Stephanus, but De Nieuwe Augustinus, honoring the legacy of the now-closed St. Augustinuskerk on Nieuwendammerdijk. On July 27, 2014, De Nieuwe Augustinus welcomed its parishioners. It stands today as a symbol of continuity and change, a quiet sanctuary amidst the vibrant tapestry of Amsterdam Noord. Here, within these walls, daily services continue Tuesday through Friday at noon. Each Sunday at 10:00 am, the community gathers, their voices joining in prayer and song. The echoes of history mingle with the present, reminding us that even in transformation, the spirit of faith endures.
