High above the rooftops of Meerkerk a spire pierces the sky. This is De Meerkerk a church with a history as rich as the Dutch soil.

De Meerkerk isn’t just any church. It stands as a testament to the village’s enduring spirit. The current building isn’t the first. A previous church tragically burned down in 1828. The present structure stands proudly a replacement of that lost edifice.

Imagine the village of Meerkerk in 1749. A description from that year paints a vivid picture. It tells of two manors Meerkerksbroek and Bloemendaal. These formed the heart of the village. The description mentions De Meerkerk itself. It calls it a dignified large church. The text emphasizes its age and its distinctive spire. This spire rises above the point where the church and choir meet. This detail adds a touch of architectural individuality.

The year 1749 also saw the construction of a fine manor house in Kwakernaak. The lord of Meerkerk himself commissioned it. He embellished it with delightful plantings. The manor’s beauty perfectly complemented the church. The lord of Meerkerk also controlled a toll bridge over the Zederik. This strategic crossing further enhanced his influence. Even the bridge’s pillars held a historical tale. They were remnants from before 1672. In that year French troops destroyed three stone arches spanning the waterway.

Meerkerk boasted an impressive history long before this. Records hint at its significance as a high lordship. Evidence can be seen in the rules of the court and the land designations. The Galgen-Akker or gallows field testifies to this authority. The lordship of Meerkerk belonged to the Van Herlaar house. It passed to the House of Vianen through marriage.

The current lord Mr Everard Francois Schimmelpenning held significant power. He was a councillor and treasurer to the Prince of Orange-Nassau. He also appointed a high dyke steward in the Alblasserwaard. Meerkerk’s influence extended far beyond its borders. The village paid dyke taxes for 873 morgens of land in Meerkerksbroek and 335 in Bloemendaal. This demonstrates its economic importance in the region. The lord’s power and the church’s presence shaped the character of this remarkable village. De Meerkerk stands tall a symbol of Meerkerk’s enduring faith and resilience.
