Why are Amsterdam’s De Kruls so special? They’re more than just public urinals. They represent Amsterdam’s unique approach to public sanitation and its citizens’ needs.

Imagine the year is 1880. Amsterdam’s canals are beautiful but also a place where people relieved themselves. This led to health problems. Enter De Krul. These curved urinals designed to prevent people from urinating in the canals. Their designs haven’t changed much since then. Some are for one person others for several.

De Kruls are crucial. The city boasts about its De Kruls. Why? It showcases concern for its people and their biological needs. The story doesn’t end there. Sadly about 15 people die each year from falling into Amsterdam’s canals while intoxicated. Often these deaths are easily identified. Why? The victims’ zippers are left open. A sobering reminder to always use De Krul.

Finding a public toilet isn’t easy in Amsterdam. Many bars charge up to one euro. Some men use trees buildings or even canals risking a 90-euro fine. De Kruls are a safe and free alternative. Be warned though De Kruls are rarely cleaned. They may be teeming with bacteria.

De Kruls are designed for men. Women are advised to use facilities at fast food chains or department stores. Amsterdam also has the world’s first retractable female toilet at Dam Square.

Some De Kruls are hidden under sidewalks. They pop up only during busy times like King’s Day. A gas explosion in 2014 launched one De Krul into the air. It sent a moped flying hitting a pedestrian who broke eight ribs. Don’t mistake them for a wash basin.

The De Krul. A simple yet fascinating piece of Amsterdam’s infrastructure and history. A testament to the city’s practical approach to sanitation and a cautionary tale of canal-side dangers. A unique part of the Amsterdam experience.
