Beyond its serene surface, De Kom holds a profound story of resistance. This canal is named after Anton de Kom a Surinamese anti-colonialist. De Kom’s life was marked by his unwavering fight against injustice. He struggled against Dutch colonial power in Suriname. He also fought against German occupiers in the Netherlands.

Anton de Kom was born in 1898. He was the son of a former slave. De Kom became a writer and activist. His activism began in Suriname during the 1930s. He protested against Dutch colonial rule. His actions led to his imprisonment.

February 7 1933 became known as Black Tuesday. A large crowd gathered in Paramaribo. They demanded De Kom’s release. Police opened fire on the protesters. Thirty people were wounded. Two people died. De Kom was then exiled to the Netherlands.

While in the Netherlands De Kom wrote his historical novel. It was titled “We Slaves Of Surinam”. The book became a bestseller in 2020. De Kom lived in Amsterdam. During World War II he joined the resistance.

In 1944 Anton de Kom was captured. He died of tuberculosis in a German camp in 1945. After his death, he was honored with the Dutch Cross of Resistance. Today Suriname recognizes him as a hero.

De Kom’s book “We Slaves of Suriname” is a powerful indictment. It speaks against colonialism racism and exploitation. It was the first anti-colonial account of Surinamese history. De Kom never saw Suriname again after his exile.

During the German occupation De Kom supported the Dutch resistance. He contributed to the illegal publication De Vonk. Despite his caution he was arrested in 1944. He was imprisoned and sent to concentration camps.

The conditions in these camps were inhumane. Thousands died from exhaustion hunger and malnutrition. Anton de Kom died at the age of 47. His life was a testament to fighting for freedom. He fought against oppression. He is commemorated each year.

The Anton de Kom monument stands in Amsterdam Zuidoost. It keeps his memory alive. The statue features lines of poetry. They reflect his determination.

De Kom’s legacy continues to inspire. His struggle for justice resonates. He fought for equality. He battled oppression. He serves as a reminder of the importance of resistance. His words echo through time. “To battle I go. Only after victory shall I return.”
