Behold! A steel enigma named De Knoop stands before you. This sculpture is by Andrè Volten. It is located near the Distelweg ferry terminal in Amsterdam-Noord.

De Knoop is not its official name. People call it that because it looks like a knot. Volten created this artwork in 1996. The sculpture has no official title.

Volten was a pioneer in geometric abstract sculpture. Steel was his primary medium. His sculptures became part of the urban experience. Volten focused on the relationship between art, architecture, surroundings, and the viewer.

Just a short walk from Volten’s former studio, De Knoop is a testament to his vision. His studio is in the Poortgebouw. This was once the gatehouse of Asterdorp. Asterdorp was a residential school.

Johannes Hendrik Mulder Jr. designed the gatehouse in 1925. It was part of a larger complex with 131 homes. The German occupiers seized Asterdorp in 1941. They used it as a ghetto. Bombardments in 1943 partially destroyed it.

After the war, the houses were repaired. But poor conditions led to their demolition in 1955. The gatehouse survived. Volten squatted there and used it as his studio from 1952 until he died in 2002.

Atelier Volten is now an exhibition space. You can see models of his major works there. De Knoop stands as one of Volten’s many prominent works. They are scattered throughout the Netherlands. Many are in Amsterdam.

Notice how De Knoop interacts with its surroundings. Consider the nearby water and the street. Think about how the sculpture changes as you move around it. Volten wanted you to experience this connection.

The sculpture is a testament to Volten’s vision. It invites contemplation and connection. De Knoop remains a striking landmark in Amsterdam-Noord. Take a moment to appreciate its form and presence.
