Did you know Amsterdam is cradled by a network of green spaces? One of these hidden gems is De Kluut. De Kluut is a small nature reserve nestled on the edge of Amsterdam, in the Nieuw-West district. It sits near the border with Halfweg. De Kluut is part of a larger ecological corridor known as the Groene AS. This green artery connects various natural areas, allowing wildlife to thrive amidst the urban sprawl. The original area, now called De Kluut 1, is a wild and untamed expanse of peat meadows. It lies north of the Haarlemmervaart canal and the railway line that runs between Amsterdam and Haarlem. De Kluut 1 is bordered by the Groote Braak waterway and the De Groote Braak allotment gardens. Together, these areas, along with the Lange Bretten nature reserve, form the Brettenzone. The construction of the A5 motorway, also known as the Westrandweg, unfortunately impacted De Kluut 1. Some of the original area was lost to make way for the road. To compensate for this loss, Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch water management authority, created a new wetland area. This new area, south of the Haarlemmerweg (N200) and west of the Westrandweg, is called De Kluut 2. While the motorway’s construction caused some disruption, De Kluut has adapted and continues to be a haven for biodiversity. De Kluut 2 is specifically designed to support marsh-dwelling creatures. Keep an eye out for the bittern, a secretive bird that calls this wetland home. Interestingly, De Kluut 2 also forms part of the Tuinen van West, a collection of gardens and green spaces in western Amsterdam. This integration further strengthens De Kluut’s role as a vital link in the city’s ecological network. De Kluut offers a peaceful retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle. Here, amidst the reeds and waterways, you can reconnect with nature.
