Tucked away in the neighborhood of Nieuwendam, stands De Kleine Kerk. It’s a charming little church with a big story. De Kleine Kerk, literally “The Small Church,” is celebrating over 150 years in Amsterdam. Built in 1843, this unassuming structure wasn’t always a place of worship. It originally served as a warehouse for merchant Willem Eeltjes. Imagine the transformation from storing goods to harboring souls. The church became a haven for followers of Menno Simons’ teachings. Over the years, prominent figures graced its pulpit. These include professors like Cnoop Koopmans, Muller, and de Hoop Scheffer. The renowned historian Blaupot ten Cate also preached there. Even Pieter Douwes Dekker, Multatuli’s older brother and a preacher in Beemster, regularly appeared as a guest speaker at De Kleine Kerk. The Cleijndert family were devoted members of the congregation. They frequently invited the preacher for coffee after the service. This tradition led to the church’s affectionate nickname among locals: “Cleijndert’s little church.” The church holds a unique place in the neighborhood’s heart. It is a testament to faith and community spirit.
