Picture a simple gray church. This is De Hervormde kerk van Ankeveen. It stands quietly in Ankeveen a village near Amsterdam. Its story begins long ago a medieval St Martinus church built in the 16th century. This original church however met a watery end. Rising groundwater from peat extraction slowly destroyed it. By 1835 it was gone completely. Only a few records and perhaps memories remained.

A replacement church a so-called waterstaatskerk was built around 1835. Old photographs show a plain structure lacking architectural detail. This second church too proved temporary. The once proud St Martinus church was replaced in 1907 by the present De Hervormde kerk van Ankeveen. Architect J van Dillewijn designed this neo-Gothic style church with its small tower.

De Hervormde kerk van Ankeveen wasn’t just a building. It was the heart of Ankeveen’s religious life for generations. It served the community until 2006 when it closed for worship. The church organ was removed and later found a home in Lage Vuursche. This wasn’t the end however.

Now the building lives on as a cultural center. De Dillewijn as it is now known hosts theater music exhibitions and even weddings. Restoration projects are ongoing. The church’s past is woven into its present. The stained-glass window even features an image of the old church after the choir and tower were demolished in 1830. De Hervormde kerk van Ankeveen stands as a testament to Ankeveen’s resilience and its rich history. It lives on a new chapter in its long and fascinating story. Imagine its walls holding the echoes of centuries of prayers music and community life. De Hervormde kerk van Ankeveen stands as a symbol of change and continuity.
