Picture this: a serene lake reflecting the sky, that’s De Grote Poel. This beautiful location has a fascinating story. De Grote Poel in Amstelveen owes its existence to the 19th-century peat excavations. Unlike other nearby pools, De Grote Poel was never reclaimed.
Adjacent to the Amsterdamse Bos, De Grote Poel is an integral part of North Holland’s ecological network. It is part of the Groene As or Green Axis. The waters of De Grote Poel are relatively shallow in several spots. Still, it is a popular place for water sports enthusiasts.
Now, imagine this: until 1994, the north shore of De Grote Poel was home to an open-air swimming pool. It was called the Poeloever. Today, the east bank houses the acclaimed restaurant Aan de Poel. This restaurant boasts two Michelin stars. The Amstelveen Town Hall is also on the east bank.
An interesting detail: the Electrische Museumtramlijn Amsterdam runs along the east side of De Grote Poel. On the west side, you will find a nature reserve called Oeverlanden. If you look northwest of De Grote Poel, you will spot the Bloesempark.
Speaking of culinary delights, the restaurant Aan de Poel has quite the history. Chefs Stefan van Sprang and Robbert Veuger opened it in 2007. They had previously worked at Restaurant Ron Blaauw. The restaurant quickly gained recognition for its French and international cuisine. It has a seating capacity of 80.
In 2008, Aan de Poel received its first Michelin star. Then, in 2012, it earned a second. SpecialBite even declared its terrace the best in North Holland. Moreover, Aan de Poel consistently ranks high in culinary guides.
In 2017, the restaurant Aan de Poel celebrated its 10th anniversary. To mark the occasion, chef Stefan van Sprang collaborated with other top chefs. Together, they created a six-course dinner for charity. They also released a special edition of their biological table oil. It came in basil, truffle, and garlic flavors.
Adding to their achievements, Aan de Poel published a limited-edition inspiration book. Each book featured a unique, hand-made cover. It offered a glimpse behind the scenes.
Interestingly, when Veuger and Van Sprang first arrived, the location was bare. There had been a fire, and the previous building was demolished. But they saw the potential. They convinced the new building owners to let them start a restaurant.
Aan de Poel is known for its combination of high-quality gastronomy. It also has an accessible atmosphere. Besides signature dishes, chef Stefan van Sprang presents a new six-course menu each month. Sommelier Robbert Veuger curates a wine list with over 600 choices.
The Michelin Guide, which awards these stars, originated in 1900. André Michelin created it to guide drivers to repair shops and good restaurants. Today, Michelin stars represent the highest culinary achievements.
So, De Grote Poel offers more than just scenic beauty. It’s a place where nature, recreation, and gastronomy meet. A place where you can enjoy a relaxing day by the water. Or indulge in a world-class dining experience.
