Journey back to 17th-century Netherlands. De Dorstige Kuil stood proudly along the Herenweg, a “famous and prosperous inn.” De Dorstige Kuil quenched the thirst of travelers on the Haarlem-Leiden route. Imagine the clatter of hooves and carriage wheels as guests arrived at this bustling hub. De Dorstige Kuil was more than just a tavern. It was a social gathering spot, a place for respite and refreshment. In 1667, it even hosted a distinguished visitor: Cosimo III de’ Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. By the mid-18th century, De Dorstige Kuil had become a favorite haunt of Amsterdam’s artistic elite. Members of the Amsterdam Drawing Academy, including renowned figures like Jan Punt and Simon Fokke, frequented the inn. Fokke, captivated by the inn’s charm, immortalized De Dorstige Kuil in several of his drawings. These sketches offer us a glimpse into the past, revealing details like the inn’s signboard, a covered area for carriages, and even a humorous depiction of a visitor relieving himself around the corner. The inn’s popularity extended beyond the art world. In 1752, a curious incident occurred involving a silver whip race and a jurisdictional dispute between local authorities. This anecdote highlights the tavern’s role in local events and the occasional clashes between tradition and authority. Even royalty graced De Dorstige Kuil with their presence. In 1752, Prince William IV, accompanied by his entourage, stopped at the inn for a cup of hot chocolate. By 1795, De Dorstige Kuil’s fortunes had changed. The inn was sold to Jan Baptist van Keulen, who later demolished it to make way for his grand estate, Kennemeroord. Though the original inn disappeared, the name lived on in a new establishment on Koediefslaan. This “new” De Dorstige Kuil, once part of the original inn’s grounds, continued the tradition of hospitality, serving as a coffee house and later, an artist’s studio. De Dorstige Kuil, whether the original inn or its successor, remains a testament to a vibrant past, echoing with the laughter of artists, the stories of travelers, and the clinking of glasses raised in good cheer.
