Located in Hoofddorp, De Boerenzwaluw isn’t your average zoo. It’s a petting zoo, a place where the gentle flutter of barn swallow wings mingles with the delighted squeals of children. De Boerenzwaluw, meaning “The Barn Swallow” in Dutch, perfectly captures the essence of this charming place. The barn swallow, Hirundo rustica, a true farm bird, has a deep connection with rural life, often choosing to build its nests in barns, sheds, or under the eaves of houses, much like the ones you’ll find at De Boerenzwaluw. These graceful aerial acrobats fill the air with their cheerful, rapid songs, flitting in and out of the farm buildings. From April to October, De Boerenzwaluw becomes a haven for these birds, providing a safe and nurturing environment before they embark on their long journey to Southern Africa for the winter. The barn swallows at De Boerenzwaluw are a sight to behold. Their striking blue-black upper plumage, combined with the distinctive red forehead, chin, and a dark band across the chest, make them instantly recognizable. Watch as they skillfully navigate the air, their long forked tails trailing behind them like elegant ribbons. They dart and dive, catching insects on the wing. To quench their thirst, they perform a mesmerizing dance, skimming the surface of the water, dipping their beaks just enough for a refreshing sip. De Boerenzwaluw is more than just a petting zoo. It’s a testament to the harmonious relationship between humans and animals. It’s a place where children can experience the joy of interacting with animals up close, learning about their habits and their importance in our ecosystem. If you’re lucky, you might witness the barn swallows building their nests. These intricate structures are made of mud and loam, carefully reinforced with straw. They often choose ledges and nooks within the animal stalls, creating a bustling community of barn swallows. The breeding season, between May and August, is a particularly exciting time at De Boerenzwaluw. The barn swallows lay clutches of 3 to 6 eggs, sometimes even having two or three broods in a season. Witnessing the parents diligently caring for their young is a truly heartwarming experience. De Boerenzwaluw provides a glimpse into the fascinating lives of these incredible birds, offering a unique experience for visitors of all ages.
