On a chilly January day in 2012, a unique sculpture was unveiled near Amsterdam Centraal Station. This is the De aardige Amsterdammer, a tribute to the city’s unsung heroes. The De aardige Amsterdammer, meaning “The Kind Amsterdammer,” is a bronze sculpture symbolizing a helping hand. It stands proudly in front of Droogbak 1, a significant location near the station and Blaka Watra, a well-known shelter for the homeless. The sculpture is the brainchild of the Regenboog Groep, a local volunteer organization dedicated to helping vulnerable Amsterdammers. The De aardige Amsterdammer was created not only to honor volunteers but also to highlight the plight of marginalized citizens. The Regenboog Groep had conducted a social experiment. They sent volunteers, some with experiences of homelessness and addiction, onto the streets with hidden cameras to document how they were treated. This experiment inspired the sculpture, serving as a poignant reminder of the need for kindness and compassion. The unveiling ceremony also marked the announcement of the “Kind Amsterdammer of the Year.” In 2012, the title was awarded to Herman Kuijl, a dedicated volunteer at Blaka Watra. Herman, who spent years offering companionship and support to the homeless and addicted, embodies the spirit of the De aardige Amsterdammer. The sculpture, created by artists Laszlo Gèleng and Klaas Hartzema, both activity leaders at Regenboog Groep, stands as a symbol of hope and support for the city’s most vulnerable residents. It reminds us of the power of simple acts of kindness and the impact they can have on transforming lives. The De aardige Amsterdammer is more than just a sculpture; it is a symbol of Amsterdam’s compassionate heart.
