It was once a vital dam and sluice on the Amstel River, the very structure that gave Amsterdam its name. Imagine the Amstel, flowing freely before a dam was built around 1270. This dam, the Damsluis, became the first connection between the settlements on either side of the river, the birthplace of this vibrant city. The Damsluis wasn’t just a barrier. It was a gateway, a meeting point, and the bustling center of early Amsterdam. Picture the Vissersdam, named for the lively fish market held right here at the Damsluis. The Dam itself was actually two squares, the Middeldam with its fish market and the adjacent Plaetse. Ships would moor at the Damsluis to unload their catch, their goods adding to the vibrant tapestry of the market. The Damsluis was more than a dam. It was the central nervous system of the city, a place where commerce and government intertwined. Amsterdam’s town hall, later to become the Royal Palace, stood proudly overlooking this bustling scene. The Damsluis also played a crucial role in controlling the water levels of the Amstel, protecting the growing city from floods. The sluice gates would open and close, regulating the river’s flow, a constant reminder of the city’s dependence on this vital structure. Sadly, the physical Damsluis is no longer with us. The Damrak, the former mouth of the Amstel, was partially filled in during the 19th century and this part of the Damrak, along with the Damsluis, disappeared. But as we stand here, on the Dam Square, we’re standing on the very spot where the Damsluis once stood. Close your eyes and imagine the shouts of the fishmongers, the creak of the ships, the rush of water through the sluice gates. The Damsluis may be gone, but its story echoes in the very stones beneath our feet.
