In 1697, a humble wooden house in Zaandam became the temporary residence of a powerful figure. This is the Czar Peter House, also known as the Czaar Peterhuisje. It is one of the oldest wooden houses in the Netherlands. Czar Peter I of Russia, also known as Peter the Great, chose this unassuming dwelling during his Grand Embassy. Peter, eager to learn about Dutch shipbuilding, stayed with the blacksmith Gerrit Kist. Kist had previously worked for the Czar in Moscow. Despite Kist’s protests about his humble home, which he shared with a worker’s widow, Peter insisted on staying. The widow was paid to move out, and the Czar, traveling incognito as Peter Michaeloff, spent a week as Kist’s guest. The Czar’s true identity was soon discovered, hindering his attempts to observe discreetly. His time at the Czar Peter House, though brief, was significant. He returned several times, his last visit being in 1717. The house later became a point of interest. It was visited by Napoleon in 1811, who even left his mark with a large “N” near the fireplace. Later visitors included Gorbachev and Putin. In the 18th century, a local innkeeper saved the Czar Peter House from demolition. King Willem I later purchased it in 1818 as a gift for his Russian daughter-in-law, Anna Pavlovna. Czar Nicholas II later commissioned a stone covering to protect the house. In 1948, the USSR returned ownership to the Netherlands. Today, the Czar Peter House stands as a testament to a pivotal moment in history. It symbolizes Peter the Great’s quest for knowledge and the enduring connection between Russia and the Netherlands.
