CWI, a hub of innovation, stands before us. It’s more than just a building; it’s a crucible where mathematics and computer science converge. Founded in 1946 as the Mathematisch Centrum, CWI has played a pivotal role in shaping our digital world. Initially, the focus was on practical applications, like creating mathematical models for the Delta Works and even designing aircraft wings for the Fokker F27. The institute evolved, embracing computer science under the guidance of Adriaan van Wijngaarden, a pioneer in the field. This shift led to the design of the first Dutch computers, the Electrologica X1 and X8, right here at CWI. The name officially changed in 1983 to Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica, reflecting the growing importance of computer science. CWI is part of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and is located at Amsterdam Science Park. Today, CWI is renowned internationally, attracting top talent from over 25 countries. Fifty tenured researchers, 30 postdocs, and 65 PhD students work on cutting-edge projects. These projects address real-world issues like internet security, medical imaging, and smart energy systems. CWI is also deeply involved in European research collaborations and Horizon Europe programs. CWI’s influence extends beyond academia. Did you know that the programming language Python, used extensively by Google, was created here by Guido van Rossum? CWI also contributed to information retrieval techniques used in SPSS. Several CWI researchers have even been knighted in the Order of the Netherlands Lion, a testament to their contributions. CWI fosters innovation through its spin-off companies. These companies, like Data Distilleries and MonetDB, translate research into practical applications. From its early days assisting with massive engineering projects to its current work on cutting-edge technology, CWI continues to shape our world in profound ways. It’s a place where abstract thought meets real-world solutions, a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation.
