Gazing at the Cruquiusbrug, have you ever considered its dual nature? This isn’t just one bridge, but two. The Cruquiusbrug, as we know it today, consists of twin bascule bridges spanning the Ringvaart of the Haarlemmermeerpolder. The southern bridge, gracefully carrying traffic towards Hoofddorp, dates back to the 1970s. It’s a robust structure, accommodating not only two lanes of straight-flowing traffic but also dedicated lanes for turning vehicles and a separate cycle path. Its northern counterpart, however, has a more recent and fascinating story. Originally built in 1934, this older northern bridge served traffic flowing from Hoofddorp to Heemstede. This original bridge was a testament to the growing need for better road connections, specifically the route between Utrecht, Uithoorn, and Haarlem. Its construction necessitated the decommissioning of the nearby Cruquius steam pumping station. This 1934 bridge was ultimately dismantled in December 2023, its parts broken down on-site. In its place now stands a new northern Cruquiusbrug, opened in 2024. This new bridge is a marvel of modern engineering. It boasts a wider passage for boats, increasing from 8.5 meters to 11 meters. The province of Noord-Holland heralded its construction as an ambitious innovation project, focusing on circularity, energy neutrality, and minimal maintenance. The replacement project faced a setback when a technical issue with the new bridge deck delayed its opening. However, with the issue resolved, the Cruquiusbrug now stands as a symbol of progress and innovation. Approximately 25,000 to 30,000 vehicles traverse these bridges daily, a testament to their crucial role in the region’s infrastructure.
