Listen closely. A Lancaster bomber hurtles toward the earth a tragic end. This monument marks the spot of the Crash site Lancaster Mk.1 War memorial. It stands as a testament to loss and remembrance.

On the night of January 30 1944 a Lancaster bomber flew over the Houtrakpolder. German fighters attacked the English plane. It was returning from a mission over Berlin. The Lancaster crashed into a farmhouse. This farm belonged to the Van der Bijl family. All seven crew members died. Six members of the Van der Bijl family also perished. This included the father mother and four children.

The Lancaster penetrated eight metres into the ground. The bodies of the Van der Bijl family were recovered and buried. Two of the crew members were also recovered. They were buried at Zwanenburg cemetery. The impact and fire made recovery impossible for the other five crew members. After the war a new house and barn were built on the same site.

Amsterdam needed new industrial sites. Plans were made for a new harbour. The initial works finished in 2000. The farm did not fit into the plans. It was demolished. This allowed the remains of the crew and the Lancaster to be recovered.

Recovery operations started in May 2000. The work lasted three months. Remains of the crew and parts of the aircraft were found. Amsterdam’s mayor proposed a memorial at the farm site. A Lancaster propeller was chosen. It sits between two walls. It shows the aircraft’s direction from Berlin to London. After the monument’s unveiling a service was held in Halfweg. The crew’s remains were buried at Zwanenburg cemetery. They rest beside their comrades.
